How to make paper snowflakes

  1. Take a square of paper at least 15 cm wide: origami paper, or a sheet of A4 or Letter with one corner folded to the opposite edge and the leftover strip cut off.
  2. Fold the square in half along the diagonal into a triangle.
  3. Fold the triangle in half, corner to corner. The right angle of the smaller triangle is the middle of the snowflake.
  4. Fold that corner into three equal parts of 30°: one part to the front, the other to the back. You get a narrow wedge of twelve layers.
  5. Cut out a template, lay it on the wedge with its tip at the middle and trace it with a pencil. Cut away the grey parts through all the layers and unfold the snowflake gently.

Tips

Thin paper cuts best: origami paper or plain printer paper. Use sharp scissors, and let children cut the hard patterns with a grown-up. Tape the snowflakes to a window or hang them on a thread – a few on one string make a garland.
