What is a funny Secret Santa?
The usual Secret Santa with one twist: the gift has to make people laugh. Something funny, odd or useless, not a “real” gift. Either with a low limit, e.g. $10, or the junk version: the gift is something already at home that nobody needs. That one costs nothing.
A funny Secret Santa on santa.haus, step by step
- Start a list. The button below fills in the budget “$10, something funny”, and you can change it. Then a name and how the draw happens: by the organizer's button, by a vote or by itself on a chosen day. No account and no e-mail.
- Send the link or show the QR code. In the team or family chat, or on the screen in a meeting. Everyone joins with just their name and sees the budget; a list holds up to 100 people.
- Everyone writes a letter to Santa. It can be a joke too: “What I surely do not need: a fourth mug and one more gingerbread candle.” Up to 500 characters; once saved, a letter can be changed for 2 minutes.
- The draw. Nobody draws themselves, and each person sees only the letter of the one they give to. After the draw, Santa can ask their person a question without giving themselves away.
- Unwrap together. At the party everyone opens their gift in turn, and the others guess who it is from. With “A number instead of the name” the parcels carry numbers, not names, so no label gives anyone away.
What does the draw show?
You choose it when you set up the list.
A number instead of the name
You write the number on the parcel. When the gift sack opens, everyone gets the number of their own parcel.
The letter now, the name later
First the letter, without a name. On the day the gift sack opens, the name shows up.
10 funny Secret Santa gifts under $10
- A rubber duck. Explain any problem to it out loud: it listens, never interrupts and never books a follow-up meeting.
- A pet rock with googly eyes. No walks, no food, no vet bills. Its new owner gets to name it.
- A fake plant for the desk. The one plant that survives the holidays, the vacation and the office heating.
- A mini zen garden. Sand, three pebbles and a tiny rake for the week before a deadline.
- A desk bell. Ring once for coffee, twice for cookies. Nobody has to come, but everyone smiles.
- Socks that look like pizza slices. Silly, warm, and they really get worn.
- A snow globe of a town nobody has been to. The odder the place, the better the story behind it.
- Stick-on mustaches. For the next video call, so nobody stays serious for long.
- A wind-up toy that walks across the desk. A five-second break, no batteries needed.
- A tiny plastic trophy. To award for anything: the best coffee, the quietest keyboard, surviving Monday.
White elephant or Secret Santa?
In a white elephant, or the dice game, the steals or the die decide who gets what. That version needs no draw; santa.haus is for the other one, where everyone draws one person and gets a gift ready just for them.
White Elephant rules and the dice game: all the rules, a random order of play, an online die and a timer.
Rules that keep it fun
- Stick to the limit. The fun is in the idea, not the price.
- Wrap it properly. Half the fun is the unwrapping, even of a rubber duck.
- Laugh together, not at someone. Nothing about weight, looks or age, nothing anyone could take to heart.
- At work keep it office-safe: no alcohol, nothing suggestive, nothing you would not unwrap in front of the whole team.
- In the junk version: clean, whole and working. Useless is fine, broken is not.
