What a Christmas cracker is

Christmas crackers come from Britain: two people each hold one end and pull until the cracker tears apart, and inside there is a joke, a paper crown and a small gift. Put one by every plate at Christmas dinner, take a few to a party or hand one over as a little gift of its own.

How to make the crackers

  1. Print at 100% scale on plain paper of 80–120 gsm – thicker paper does not crinkle well at the ends.
  2. Cut out the wrap along the dark outline, with the zigzag at both ends.
  3. Put a folded crown, a joke and a small gift such as sweets inside the toilet paper roll.
  4. Roll the wrap round the tube, pattern outwards, and glue it on the grey strip.
  5. Squeeze both ends on the dashed lines and tie them with ribbon.
  6. For the crown, glue the four parts into a strip and close it at the mark that fits the head.

A cracker snap from a craft shop, put in before you tie the ends, makes the bang – without it the cracker simply tears open. Never put anything sharp or made of glass inside.

The jokes go in too: print Christmas jokes for kids and grown-ups (and cracker jokes to print) and cut them into slips, one for each cracker.
