How to make paper snowflakes
- Take a square of paper at least 15 cm wide: origami paper, or a sheet of A4 or Letter with one corner folded to the opposite edge and the leftover strip cut off.
- Fold the square in half along the diagonal into a triangle.
- Fold the triangle in half, corner to corner. The right angle of the smaller triangle is the middle of the snowflake.
- Fold that corner into three equal parts of 30°: one part to the front, the other to the back. You get a narrow wedge of twelve layers.
- Cut out a template, lay it on the wedge with its tip at the middle and trace it with a pencil. Cut away the grey parts through all the layers and unfold the snowflake gently.
Tips
Thin paper cuts best: origami paper or plain printer paper. Use sharp scissors, and let children cut the hard patterns with a grown-up. Tape the snowflakes to a window or hang them on a thread – a few on one string make a garland.
